WHAT: Active Sport & Health Centre Grand Opening Celebration, KidSport Ontario fundraiser (Hamilton chapter)
“Helping you to get active and to stay active”, ACTIVE Sport & Health Centre’s slogan, will be put to the test on Saturday, April 5th, at their Grand Opening celebration. ACTIVE has partnered with KidSport Ontario’s Hamilton chapter to raise money and awareness for KidSport’s important vision: “that sport and physical activity should be accessible to all children and youth, and that no one should be denied its benefits”.
The Grand Opening will kick off with raffle prizes, music, finger foods, and clinic tours. Join Burlington Mayor Cam Jackson, as he cuts the ceremonial ribbon at 1:00pm to officially open this multi-disciplinary treatment and rehabilitation centre.
KidSport Background Information:
Over the years, KidSport Ontario has helped almost 3000 underserviced children gain access to the benefits of physical activity through sports registration fees and sports equipment grants. Aside from the obvious health benefits of fitness, including strengthening muscle and bone, improving heart function, and reducing the risk of developing obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, physical fitness provides an important influence on mental and emotional development. Through activity, children improve their self-esteem, learn to set goals, develop leadership skills, and work as a team. KidSport’s website, www.kidsport.ca, points to the reduction of physical education programming in schools, a lack of available and adequate facilities, and the increasing cost of equipment and transportation as barriers for an active youth population. Considering that childhood obesity and its associated health care concerns and costs are steadily rising, KidSport’s mandate provides a valuable opportunity for change.
Active Sport & Health Centre Background Information: ACTIVE Sport & Health Centre, located at 3300 Fairview Street in Burlington, caters to an active population, offering a team-based approach to health care and manual therapy. ACTIVE’s team of six young professionals (a chiropractor, two Registered Massage Therapists, an Athletic Therapist, a Certified Pedorthist, and a Sports Nutritionist) are athletes themselves, and are passionate about the essential roles that activity and fitness play in a healthy lifestyle. “We see the positive effects of an active lifestyle in our clients, and it makes sense to support that in the local community, starting with the younger generation,” says Dr. Worobec. “That’s why KidSport’s philosophy makes so much sense to us.” So far, Hamilton’s branch of KidSport Ontario has helped 17 local children via sports registration fees and equipment grants, totaling nearly $6000. The ACTIVE team hopes to increase those numbers substantially.
